Reflex Micellar Casein
Micellar Casein from Reflex Nutrition
Casein as a source of protein was for many years slated as being a poor substitute
to whey protein, however Chemical Nutrition first bought about a rational argument
as to why it might actually be superior to whey protein in certain circumstances.
Reflex Nutrition has now bought out a Casein protein product, Aimed primarily
as a pre-bed protein. Where sustained levels of Amino acids are preferable to
highly bio-available, rapidly digested whey protein source.
Having tried a tub of chocolate, the mixing is instant, the taste very pleasant,
the consistency is much thicker than whey, almost like a runny semolina. I prefer
the thickness of this Micellar Casein mixed with water to the wishy washy consistency
of whey protein mixed with water. Best advice would be, use Whey protein during
the day, pre/post workout, and a good serving of Reflex Micellar Casein just
before bed.
Laatest update - I have now discovered, my favourite mix and use of micellar casein is last thing at night I have 3 scoops of Chocolate Micellar Cassein and 1 scoop of Chocolate Reflex Instant Whey, then for breakfast, 3 scoops of Instant whey and 1 scoop of Micellar Cassein, mixed with milk or water and poured over breakfast cereal (uncooked poridge oats) ... Yum.
Reflex Nutrition details follow -
Micellar Casein from Reflex Nutrition an instant mixing time-release protein
product, it is made from fresh skimmed milk. It is not to be confused with acid
casein or caseinates which are made using manufacturing processes which can
denature the protein. The protein found in Micellar Casein is un-denatured,
providing approximately 80% Casein protein and 20% Whey protein.
In a ground breaking study(1), carried out by Dr Yves Boire, the differences
in metabolic responses of Whey Protein and Casein were individually observed
over a 7 hour period in 16 young & healthy volunteers. The findings were
very interesting, and have shown that both Casein and Whey have very different
applications when it comes to maintaining and building muscle tissue.
The most important findings were:
i) Casein was found to inhibit muscle breakdown by 34% over a 7 hour period.
ii) Blood plasma amino acid concentrations remained significantly higher over
a 7 hour period with casein compared to whey.
iii) Blood plasma amino acid concentrations dropped dramatically after 3 hours
in the group consuming whey.
iv) Although blood plasma levels dropped dramatically with Whey, the net increase
in protein synthesis was boosted by 68%.
The reason for Casein's ability to sustain such a lengthy release of amino
acids is because of its unique digestibility. It forms a gel in the stomach,
slowing the transit time in the digestive system, and thus slows the digestion
of the protein.
These findings demonstrate casein as the perfect protein source when a positive
nitrogen balance is preferred for more than 3 hours. e.g when you are sleeping,
or a prolonged period during the day. Whereas whey protein is seen as the preferred
protein source for increasing protein synthesis. e.g between meals and after
workouts.
Micellar Casein, like all Reflex products, is made in the U.K to the highest
standards possible. Adhering to strict IS09001 procedures you are guaranteed
a quality product every time.
